  1. Skylo has partnered with the National Federation of Fishers Cooperatives in India (FISHCOPFED) to improve the safety of fishermen, increase their profitability and bolster ecosystem sustainability.
      • Skylo is an internet of things (IoT)-based solutions provider.
      • Technology will transform the fishery sector in four main ways – safety, productivity, sustainability, and greater profitability.
      • Skylo will provide IoT-based solutions to marine fishing and aquaculture sectors, including monitoring oxygen and pH levels of water in ponds across the states (aquaculture and inland fisheries) and enhancing fish yields and profitability for the fish farmers.

A) MoES-ESSDP (Earth System Science Data) portal:
⚬ It is an integrated digital web portal of MoES institutes to make data on various themes of earth system science available for public use.
⚬ The portal is hosted by Indian National Centre For Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) at https://incois.gov.in/essdp.
⚬ The portal would facilitate search and retrieval of earth system science data (of atmosphere, ocean, poles, geosciences and seismology) for societal benefit.

  1. The Central Govt has approved to establish two additional facilities under the Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR) programme in the Phase II of this program.
      • The new facilities will be commercial-cum-strategic facilities with a total storage capacity of 6.5 MMT (Million Metric Ton) underground storages at:
        • Chandikhol, Odisha (4 MMT)
        • Padur, Karnataka (2.5 MMT)
      • They will be built in Public Private Partnership mode.
      • In the Phase I of this program, three such facilities were established at:
        • Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh (1.33 MMT)
        • Mangaluru, Karnataka (1.5 MMT)
        • Padur, Karnataka (2.5 MMT)
      • These petroleum reserve sites were built in the wake of slump in the crude oil prices in the international market last year.
      • These can be useful in the event of oil shortage.
  2. Parliament has passed the Marine Aids to Navigation Bill, 2021 to repeal the Lighthouse Act, 1927. Special features of the Bill:
      • The Bill empowers the Central Government to designate any aid to navigation under its control as a “heritage lighthouse”.
      • In addition to their function as aids to navigation, such lighthouses will be developed for educational, cultural, and tourism purposes.
      • The Bill applies to the whole of India including various maritime zones including territorial waters, continental shelf, and exclusive economic zone.
  3. Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched Information-Monitoring, Evaluation and Social Audit (I-MESA) scheme.
      • The scheme mandates social audits to be conducted for all the schemes of the Department starting FY 2021-22.
      • These social audits are done through Social Audit Units (SAU) of the States and National Institute for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj.
      • Social Audit is the audit of a scheme jointly by the Government and the people, especially by those who are affected by the scheme or its beneficiaries.
  4. Ministry of Women and Child Development inaugurated the National Commission for Women’s 24/7 helpline number – 7827170170.
      • The helpline aims to provide 24/7 online support to women affected by violence.
  5. Geological Survey of India, an attached office of Ministry of Mines, has taken up 7 projects for lithium exploration in Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir and Rajasthan during 2021-22.
      • In past, GSI has already taken up 14 projects on Lithium and associated elements.
      • The projects are done under the guidelines of United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC) and Mineral Evidence and Mineral Content Rules (MEMC-2015) for exploring mineral resource including lithium.
      • Under the aegis of Ministry of Mines, a joint venture company named ‘Khanij Bidesh India Ltd.’ (KABIL) has been formed by three CPSEs namely National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) and Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL).
      • KABIL has signed non-binding MoU with three state-owned organizations of Argentina for sharing information in the field of mineral acreages.

State News

  1. Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO) has launched the ”Mission Niryatak Bano” to promote aspiring exporters in the state.
      • The campaign is aimed at registering and handholding the local traders willing to expand their business to foreign countries, in six steps.
      • This shall cover assistance from training, securing necessary documentation, registration in Rajasthan Export Promotion Council and even support in exports and trade operations.
  2. Nomenclature of J&K High Court has been changed to High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
      • Earlier, the name was ‘Common High Court of J&K and Ladakh’.
      • President Ram Nath Kovind has signed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Removal of Difficulties) Order, 2021, to effect the change.

Agriculture and Rural Development

  1. Central govt is planning to set up a National Farmers Database to offer proactive and personalised services to farmers.
      • The database will record farmers with the help of digitised land records.
      • The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare has already started the work of creating ‘Agristack’ — a digital ecosystem of agriculture — to help the government in effective planning towards increasing the income of farmers in particular and improving the efficiency of the agriculture sector as a whole.
      • No private sector companies are involved in the building of the Agristack.
      • The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare in consultation with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is in the process of bringing out a data policy for the agriculture sector to use available data for increasing farmer’s income.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. National Fertilisers Limited (NFL) and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) have signed MoU with Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) for transfer of technology of nano urea liquid.
      • Under these agreements, IFFCO will transfer the technology of liquid nano urea to NFL and RCF without any royalty.
      • NFL and RCF will establish new nano urea production plants to increase the supply of products to the farmers.
      • Purpose – to enhance the adaptability of nano urea by farmers.
      • India has become the first country globally to start commercial production of nano urea (produced by IFFCO).
      • Nano urea reduces the use of urea by up to 50%. Storage of nano urea is also easy for the farmers. Further, it also helps in direct financial savings, reduction in transportation cost, and better production.

International News

  1. According to a report by World Trade Organization (WTO), European Union is the world’s largest agriculture produce exporter, with a share of 16.1% in 2019.
      • US with 13.8% and Brazil with 7.8% share follow EU in this list.
      • India is at the 9th position with a share of 3.1% in global agricultural exports, replacing New Zealand.
      • Mexico also increased its share significantly to 3.4%. It replaced Malaysia at 7th position.
      • The progress of countries, in terms of agriculture exports, during 1995 to 2019, is assessed in this report.

⚬ In 2019, top rice exporters were:

⚬ Cotton: India is also the third-largest cotton exporter (7.6%), and the fourth-largest importer (10%) in 2019.
⚬ Soya bean: India (0.1%) has a meagre share but was ranked ninth in the world.
⚬ Meat: In the “meat and edible meat offal” category, India secured 8th rank in the world with a global share of 4%

⚬ India’s share of foreign value-added content in its Agri exports clocked 3.8% share primarily due to high tariffs on Agri imports to boost the domestic markets and local farmers.

      • Labour indicators recorded an all-round improvement in 2019-20 compared with the previous two years I.e., 2017-18 and 2018-19.
      • Men’s unemployment rate fell to 5.1% in 2019-20 from 6% in 2018-19.

Additional Facts:

    • Women labour force participation improved because out the total employment generated (in person days) in the 2020-21 under MGNREGS, women’s share has increased to around 207 crore person days.
    • Government has increased MGNREGA wage to Rs. 202 a day from Rs. 182 to benefit nearly 13.62 crore families.
    • The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for women has increased from 24.5% in 2018-19 to 30% in 2019-20.
    • Govt has launched many initiatives to increase women’s participation in labour force. These results are validating those efforts.
    • The efforts include enhancement in paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks, provision for mandatory creche facility in the establishments having 50 or more employees, permitting women workers in the night shifts with adequate safety measures, etc.
