  1. 3rd Foreign Office Consultations between India and New Zealand were held virtually.
      • Ms. Riva Ganguly Das, Secretary (East) of Ministry of External Affairs led the Indian delegation while New Zealand-side was led by Mr. Mark Sinclair, Deputy Secretary, Americas and Asia Group, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
      • The last round of consultations was held in February 2019 in New Delhi.
      • Both sides had discussion on common problems like covid-19 among other things.
  2. IIM-Indore has partnered with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
      • Purpose – to identify the challenges caused by Covid-19 pandemic across various sectors and try to find measures for them.
      • IIM Indore received a research grant of Rs. 85.3 Lakhs.
  3. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued guidelines to reduce the waiting time of vehicles at the toll plazas to 10 seconds or less.
      • The new set of guidelines will also ensure seamless flow of traffic at the toll plazas by not allowing vehicles to queue up more than 100 metres.
      • If there is a queue of waiting vehicles of more than 100 metres due to some reason, the vehicles will be allowed to pass without paying toll till the queue comes within 100 meters from the toll booth.
      • For this purpose, a yellow line at a distance of 100 meters from the toll booth will be marked in each toll lane.
      • From mid of February 2021, the overall FASTag penetration in NHAI toll plazas has reached 96% and many of them have 99% penetration.
  4. Central govt has announced to launch a Unified Health Interface (UHI) for digital health as part of the National Digital Health Ecosystem.
      • It will be an open and interoperable IT network for digital health that shall enable public and private solutions.
      • It will allow users to search, book and avail necessary healthcare services such as tele-consultations or laboratory tests.
      • The system will ensure that only verified healthcare providers join the ecosystem.
  5. Department of Biotechnology is providing its support to three public enterprises for increasing the domestic vaccine production capacity.
      • The three public enterprises are: Haffkine Biopharmaceutical Corporation Ltd, Mumbai, Indian Immunologicals Ltd, Hyderabad and Bharat Immunologicals & Biologicals Ltd, Bulandshahar, UP.
      • These are being supported by the Department of Biotechnology under Atmanirbhar Bharat 3.0 Mission Covid Suraksha (which has a corpus of Rs 900 crores).
      • Haffkine Biopharma will produce Covaxin under technology transfer arrangement with Bharat Biotech Ltd, Hyderabad.
  6. Central govt has approved the proposal of the Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) journalist welfare committee (JWC) to provide Rs 5 lakh each as financial relief to families of 26 journalists who died due to Covid-19 this year.
      • A group of people associated with the media have together launched “Frontline Journalist Memorial Fund” to help the family of frontline journalists who were the sole bread earners of the family and died due to COVID-19.
      • This fund has nothing to do with the Central govt or any govt agency.
  7. M Rajeevan (Secretary of Ministry of Earth Sciences), along with scientists Kamaljit Ray (lead author), S S Ray, R K Giri and A P Dimri, has prepared a study on Indian cyclones and deaths caused by them.
      • As many as 117 cyclones hit India in 50 years from 1970-2019 and claimed over 40,000 lives.
      • However, the mortality rate due to tropical cyclones has come down significantly over the past 10 years.

  1. Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa has launched an online portal named “Akansha” to provide details of all the Corporate Social Responsibility projects or activities, being carried out, in the state.
      • It is a first of its kind initiative in India.
      • UNDP’s Sustainable Development Goals Coordination Centre helped Karnataka’s Department of Planning, Programme Monitoring and Statistics in developing this portal.
      • The portal is linked with the state’s SDG targets. Therefore, companies can align their CSR projects with these targets through this portal to achieve SDGs at a faster pace.
AKANSHA Initiative
  1. Madhya Pradesh government launched Ankur scheme to reward citizens for planting trees during monsoon.
      • People who wish to participate in the tree plantation drive can register themselves on Vayudoot app.
      • People will be given the Pranvayu Award for their participation in this drive.
  2. J&K administration has launched the Special Assistance Scheme for Covid Mortalities (SASCM) scheme for providing financial assistance to families, who lost their only bread earner to the Coronavirus pandemic.
      • Under the SASCM scheme, cash assistance of Rs 1000 per month shall be provided to spouse and the eldest member of the family.
      • Besides, the SASCM scheme provides for a scholarship of Rs 20,000 per annum for school-going students and Rs 40,000 per annum for college-going students.
      • Also, financial support will be provided for self-employment for any of the surviving member, who wishes to start any business for livelihood support.
      • Special Cell in Social Welfare Department will be opened to identify and track such families.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. V O Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Trust, Tuticorin, has signed an MoU with the National Technology Centre for Ports Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC), IIT Madras for operation, manning and maintenance of vessel traffic system and for development of indigenous Vessel Traffic Software (VTS) at VOC Port.
      • NTCPWC is the technology arm of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
      • VTS software will facilitate identification, tracking and analysis of shipping traffic, provide real-time information for pilots, and monitor meteorological warnings among other things.
      • The VOC port is the first major port in India to sign a MoU with NTCPWC for the development of indigenous software for VTS.

  1. “Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update” has been released by UK Meteorological Office and World Meteorological Organization.
      • There is a 40% possibility of the annual average temperature rising to 1.5º C above the pre-industrial levels in one of the next 5 years.
      • There is a 90% likelihood of one year in the next 5 years will become the warmest year on record and will surpass the 2016 levels.
      • Three warmest years so far, where the temperature was 1.2ºC above the pre-industrial levels, were 2016, 2019, and 2020.
      • 2010-20 was the warmest decade so far.
      • Pre-industrial levels are defined as the 1850-1900 average.
      • Annual mean global (land and sea) near-surface temperature is likely to be at least 1°C warmer than preindustrial levels in each of the coming 5 years and is very likely to be within the range 0.9 – 1.8°C.
