      • What: The Department of Telecom (DoT) has introduced a new 10-digit numbering series starting with 160 for service and transactional calls made by government bodies, regulators, and financial entities.
      • Why: This move aims to help subscribers differentiate between legitimate calls from these entities and fraudulent calls from scammers posing as government officials.
      • Tell me more:
        • The 10-digit number will be issued in 1600ABCXXX format for government and regulators where:
          • AB represents the code of the telecom circle (e.g., 11 for Delhi, 22 for Mumbai).
          • The digit at the C place indicates the code of the telecom operator (Like Airtel, JIO)
          • XXX consists of digits between 000 and 999.
        • Similarly, for financial entities regulated by RBI, SEBI, PFRDA, and IRDAI, the 10-digit number will be issued in the 1601ABCXXX format.
          • In this series, 1 is added.
        • Note: Telecom service providers (TSPs) must verify each entity before assigning a number from the 160 series, ensuring its exclusive use for service and transactional voice calls as per the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR) 2018.

About Zero balance rule of RBI
- The RBI’s 2014 circular states that banks should inform the customers immediately if the minimum balance requirement is not being met. They should also inform customers about the penal charges that would be applicable for not maintaining a minimum balance in savings accounts. It should be ensured that the balance in the savings account does not turn into a negative balance on account of the levy of charges for non-maintenance of minimum balance.
- Instead of levying penal charges for non-maintenance of minimum balance in ordinary savings bank accounts, banks should limit the services available on such accounts to those available to basic savings bank deposit accounts (BSBDA) and restore regular services when the balance returns to the required level.
