  1. Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had released a gazette notification in June to advance the timeline of meeting 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2023, two years ahead of the previous target.
      • From April 1st, 2023, all oil companies in India shall sell ethanol-blended petrol with a percentage of ethanol up to 20%.
      • Reason – to reduce oil imports which make up to 85% India’s oil demands.

      • Anyone who has passed class 10 can enrol for this course.
      • The course is available on legalaffairs.nalsar.ac.in.
      • The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs launched the Preamble of the Indian Constitution in 23 languages.

State News

  1. Madhya Pradesh has approved the proposal to create cyber tehsils to make the process of obtaining land records or conversion of undisputed land easy.
      • Madhya Pradesh will be the first state in the country to do so.
      • Tehsils are the units of a district, headed by a Tehsildar, who maintains the land records and collects land revenue.
      • Madhya Pradesh govt also launched ‘Urja Saksharta Abhiyan’ to make citizens energy literate. Again, MP will become the first state to run India’s energy literacy campaign on a big scale.
  2. Odisha and UNICEF have signed a letter of agreement (LoA) to collaborate on communication and policy initiatives of the state’s Department of Water Resources.
      • The LoA aims at engaging with the community on sustainable water management, prudent water use, equity in water distribution, water conservation, women as principal stakeholders in water governance and participatory irrigation management.
      • As part of the collaboration, a new website ‘Youth4Water’ has been launched to spread awareness about water management.
      • The state will also convert State water policy, development of Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) as a centre of excellence.
  3. Haryana govt has signed an MoU with the National Institute for Smart Government (NISG) to improve the governance of the state.
      • The MoU will be valid for five years from the date of signing which may be extended further up to five years by mutual consent of both parties.
      • The NISG is a not-for-profit company set up by the central government on the public-private-partnership (PPP) model for helping states and UTs in adopting reforms for smart governance and digitisation.
      • The Secretary of Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology as its Chairman.
  4. Three new solar parks will be set up in Madhya Pradesh at Agar, Shajapur and Neemuch. The cumulative power generation capacity of the parks would be 1500 MW.
      • Indian Railways has signed an agreement with the MP govt for purchasing power from the solar parks.
      • Indian Railways will draw power from the grid connectivity in seven states.
  5. Driverless train operations were launched on Delhi Metro’s 59-km-long Pink Line (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar.
      • With this, Delhi Metro has become the world’s fourth largest automated train network with 97 km in the driverless system.
  6. Cherry Blossom Festival 2021 was celebrated in Shillong, Meghalaya.

      • Another series of Chinese satellites called Shijian is used for technology verification.
  2. 41st General Conference of UNESCO was held in Paris, France.
      • At the Conference, Audrey Azoulay was re-elected as the D-G of UNESCO.
      • UNESCO released the ‘Reimagining Our Futures Together: A New Social Contract for Education’ report.
      • Separately, India was also elected to the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO for a four-year term till 2025.
        • The Committee is responsible for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance upon requests from States parties.

  1. ‘The State of Food and Agriculture’ (SOFA) 2021 report has been released by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).
      • The report focussed on the need to make food supply chains more resilient to shock and stresses to ensure availability and access to food by people.
      • Although, agri-food supply chain has shown an unexpected resilience in the face of Covid-19 pandemic, actions are required to make it more resilient, climate-friendly, affordable, and sustainable.
      • Globally, some 3 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet, one that protects against malnutrition in all its forms.
      • As per FAO, if a shock reduced the income of people in 143 countries by one-third, a healthy diet would be beyond the financial reach of an additional 1 billion people.
      • The burden of this additional 1 bn people would fall mostly on middle-income countries. In low-income countries, this shock would translate into a deficit in availability of energy-sufficient diet for a large amount of population.
      • Meaning of agri-food system – It includes production of agricultural products (food crops + non-food products like livestock, fisheries, forestry and aquaculture), production chain of synthetic meat, and food supply chain from producer to consumers.
        • Globally, these systems produce some 11 billion tonnes of food each year.
  2. International Organization for Migration (UN migration agency) has released the 11th edition of World Migration Report 2022.
International Migration • Around 281 million migrants were present in the world in 2020, which is equanimous to 3.6% of the global population.

Internal Displacement –

Internal displacement • By the end of 2020, there had been a total of 40.5 million new internal displacements.
Causes of Internal displacement • Climate change has displaced more people than conflicts, internally.
76% (30.7 million) of these new displacements were triggered by disasters and 24% (9.8 million) were caused by conflict and violence.
Natural disasters • Storms accounted for 14.6 million displacements and floods for 14.1 million displacements.
Philippines experienced the highest absolute numbers of new disaster displacements in 2020 at 5.1 million approx.

3. 3rd edition of the Access to Seeds Index 2021 has been released.

    • The index assesses 67 seed companies on their efforts to make their products available to smallholder farmer in three regions: South and South-east Asia, Eastern and Southern Africa, and Western and Central Africa.
    • Ultimately, the index evaluates seed companies’ contributions to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger.

Results:

    • Together, all the 67 companies have a presence in 54 of 55 index countries in Western and Central Africa, Eastern and Southern Africa and South and South-east Asia.
    • 31 companies are present in all 14 South and South-east Asia countries, with at least five companies present in each country.
    • Companies with a high presence in Asia – East-West Seed (Thailand-based) with a presence in 14 countries, and Rijk Zwaan, Takii and Advanta, who all have a presence in 13 countries.
    • Increasingly, companies from South and Southeast Asia, notably India, are setting up operations in sub-Saharan Africa, making their seeds and varieties work in relatively similar climatic conditions.
    • India’s seed market is the most mature in the region. The private and public sector play an equally important role in seed production and distribution.
    • Companies from India – Acsen HyVeg, Bioseed, Indo-American Hybrid Seeds, JK Agri Genetics, Kalash Seeds, Mahyco, Namdhari Seeds, National Seeds Corporation, Nuziveedu Seeds, Rallis India, and Rasi Seeds.
