      • The Business 20 (B20) is the official G20 dialogue forum with the global business community. It was established in 2010.

  2. Union Minister of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has launched the world’s first prototype of BS-VI (Bharat Stage Six) Stage II compliant “Electrified Flex Fuel vehicle”, developed by Toyota Innova Hycross.
      • This is also India’s first flex-fuel electrified vehicle that can run in either electric mode or 100% ethanol.
      • Flex Fuel Technology is a technology that allows the engine of the vehicle to utilize a higher blend of ethanol in petrol or gasoline (more than 20%).

      • The program that was supposed to last for five years, from 2022-23 to 2026-27, will be active till 2027-28.
      • The distribution of the incentives will be on a quarterly basis, instead of an annual plan.
      • The ministry also approved a request to add two more TAs to test the vehicles and components.
        • Global Automotive Research Centre (GARC) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
        • National Automotive Test Tracks (NATRAX) in Madhya Pradesh.

  1. Ministry of Textiles has approved the Startup Guidelines for Technical Textiles – Grant for Research and Entrepreneurship across Aspiring Innovators in Technical Textiles (GREAT).
      • This initiative offers a grant of up to Rs 50 Lakhs, supporting aspiring innovators in the technical textiles field for 18 months.
      • To be eligible for the grant, the startups shouldn’t be more than five years
      • The government has also given its nod to 26 institutes for upgrading their laboratory infrastructure and training in the application areas of technical textiles.
      • The government has notified two QCOs (quality control orders) for 31 technical textile products including 19 geotextiles and 12 protective textiles.

  1. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin has inaugurated the expansion of the state governments’ free breakfast schemeto all state-run primary schools from classes 1 to 5.
      • With this scheme, TN has now become the first statein India to provide free breakfast to students in all government schools.
      • This scheme is viewed as an extension of the mid-day meals, the CM’s Free Breakfast Scheme is aimed at reducing malnutrition and increasing attendance by providing nutritious breakfast.

    1. Global Environment Facility (GEF) has launched the new Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) during 7th Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in Vancouver,

About the framework

    • Aim: To directly support global efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030, a goal agreed to by 196 countries as part of the Global Biodiversity Framework established at COP15.
    • Funding: Governments, non-profits, and the private sector can now contribute their funds to GBFF.
    • Fund allocations: 20% will be allocated to Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLCs)
    • Note: This is the first time there would be funds channelled to non-state actors like the indigenous communities.
    • First meeting: The first GBFF Council meeting will be held in January 2024.

      • The two have signed a long-term loan of up to $14.7 million to construct and operate a 25-megawatt solar photovoltaic-based power plant located in Tirunelveli district in the state of Tamil Nadu to increase clean and low-cost energy supply to commercial and industrial customers.

  1. 29 August- National Sports Day (NSD)
      • Objective: To commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand
        • He is also known as Hockey Wizard’ and ‘The Magician’.
      • The first National Sports Day was celebrated on August 29, 2012 and hence this year marks the 12th anniversary of Rashtriya Khel Divas. 
      • Significance: Encourages people of all ages to embrace physical fitness, regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
        • Serves as a catalyst for developing a robust sports culture in India.
      • Theme – “Sports are an enabler to an inclusive and fit society”
      • A National Sports Federations (NSF) portal has also been launched this year.
        • It is a unified online portal and a single window system for the NSFs for processing of annual renewal of recognition of NSFs, elections of NSFs etc.
        • It will replace the existing system of physical mode of submission of documents by NSFs and ensure better coordination among the Department of Sports and the NSFs.

  2. 29 August: International Day against Nuclear Tests
      • The day was established when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution on December 2, 2009, in its 64th session.
      • This resolution was initiated by Kazakhstan to mark the 18th anniversary of the closing of the USSR-controlled Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site in 1991 at Kazakhstan.
      • The first-ever International Day against Nuclear Tests was commemorated on 29 August, 2010.
      • The world’s first nuclear explosionoccurred on July 16, 1945, when a plutonium implosion device was tested at a site in New Mexico. The code name for the test was “Trinity”.

Various International Treaties relating to nuclear weapons are-
• Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) 1968:
o The treaty defines nuclear-weapon states as those that have built and tested a nuclear explosive device before January 1, 1967 – the US, Russia, UK, France and China – and disallows any other state from acquiring nuclear weapons.
o India is not a signatory; it declined to accede to the NPT, citing concerns about the treaty's perceived discriminatory nature and lack of reciprocal obligations from nuclear weapons states.
• Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT):
o It bans nuclear explosions, whether for military or peaceful purposes, by everyone, everywhere: above ground, under water and underground.
o India has not signed the CTBT.
o It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 September 1996, but has not entered into force.
• Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG):
o It is a Group of nuclear supplier countries that seek to prevent nuclear proliferation by controlling the export of materials, equipment and technology that can be used to manufacture nuclear weapons.
o India is not a member of the NSG.
• Treaty on the Prohibition of nuclear weapons/ Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty:
o It is the first legally binding international agreement to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons, with the goal of leading towards their total elimination.
o It entered into force on 22 January 2021 and India is not a member of this treaty.

      • This was the first edition of the championship held in Germany.
      • FIDE World Rapid Team 2023 is organized by FIDE in partnership with WR Logistics GmbH and witnessed the participation of 36 teams and 300 players from different countries.
        • Each team has at least six and not more than nine players, including at least one female player and one recreational player.

  1. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, Kolkata, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with S.Dempo Holdings Private Limited (Dempo Group) for building commercial vessels.
      • The vessels will be built at the 3 shipyards of the Dempo Group, including two in Goa and one in Bhavnagar, Gujarat.
      • It marks the GRSE’s first attempt to build commercial vessels.

  2. Government of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Government of New Zealand for an Open Sky Policy, which will allow more flights between various cities in the two countries.
      • Under this, New Zealand’s designated airlines can operate unrestricted services with any type of aircraft, to/from six Indian cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.
      • This is set to amplify bilateral civil aviation relations.
