  1. Central Govt has proposed to set up a National Research Foundation (NRF) to strengthen the research ecosystem in the country.
      • NRF is being envisaged as an umbrella structure that will improve linkages between academia and industry for research & development (R&D).
      • The total proposed outlay of NRF is Rs 50,000 over a period of 5 years. This amount was allocated in the Union Budget 2021-22.
      • The NRF will deal with subjects related to science, humanities, art & culture.
      • This is the first time that NRF is being established in India.
      • The announcement of creating NRF was made in Union Budget of 2019. But the budget was allocated in 2021.
  2. Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, has released the ODF Plus Manuals under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase -II.
      • The manuals provide information about key components of ODF Plus – Grey Water Management, Plastic Waste Management, Faecal Sludge Management, Biodegradable Waste Management and IEC.
      • In 2020, Phase-II of the SBM (G) was launched with a total outlay of over Rs. 1.4 lakh crores to focus on the sustainability of Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM).
      • Over 2 lakh villages will be supported under the SBM (G) Phase -II in 2021-22. For this, over Rs. 40,700 crores have been allocated. These villages will be able to achieve solid and liquid waste management (SLWM).
  3. Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia has formed three committees to advise him on critical issues of the airline industry.
      • The three advisory committees for airlines, airports and maintenance and repair organisations and flight training institutes, comprise CEOs and promoters.
      • All the committees will be chaired by the Minister himself.
  4. Central govt has launched secured logistics document exchange platform for digital exchange of logistics-related papers.
      • The digital initiative is now set to improve logistics efficiency, reduce logistics cost and promote multi-modality and sustainability in a big way.
      • The platform will replace the present manual process of generation, exchange and compliance of logistics documents with a digitised, secure and seamless document exchange system.
      • The platform can be used via Aadhaar and blockchain-based security protocols for data security and authentication.
      • The govt has also launched a calculator for greenhouse gas emissions for choosing the sustainable and right mode of transport for freight movements.
      • The calculator can compare GHG emissions across different modes of transportation. It can also do commodity-wise comparison of GHG emissions and total cost of transportation, including their environmental cost, between movement by road and rail.
  5. ISRO is expected to launch a Geo-imaging Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-03) in the coming months of this year.
      • The EOS-03 satellite will enable near-real-time monitoring of natural disasters like floods and cyclones. It will also send data related to weather and environmental change.
      • The satellite will image the whole country four to five times on a daily basis.
      • In addition to natural disasters, EOS-03 will also enable monitoring of water bodies, crops, vegetation conditions, and forest cover changes.
      • The first earth observation satellite – EOS-01 – was launched in 2020 for monitoring agriculture, forestry and disasters.
  6. Minister of State for Science & Technology Dr Jitendra Singh informed Rajya Sabha that ISRO is expected to launch its first Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) towards the end of this year.
      • The SSLV can carry a payload weighing 500 kilograms to the polar orbit, 500 km above Earth’s surface and a 300-kilogram payload into Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit.
      • ISRO will use the newly developed launch system for on-demand services and launching small satellites.
      • ISRO will launch geo imaging satellite GISAT-1 onboard GSLV-F10 rocket on August 12, 2021.
      • The delayed Chandrayaan-3 mission will be launched in the third quarter of 2022.
      • Gaganyaan’s expected launch date is also 2022.
  7. 14 tiger reserves in India have received accreditation of the Global Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CA|TS).
      • CA|TS is a globally accepted conservation tool that sets best practice and standards to manage tigers and encourages assessments to benchmark progress.
      • CA|TS is being implemented across 125 sites in 7 tiger range countries and India has the highest 94 sites, out of which assessment was completed for 20 tiger reserves this year.
      • India has 51 tiger reserves across 18 states.
      • CA|TS was launched in 2013 by tiger and protected area experts. CA|TS is an important part of Tx2, the global goal to double wild tiger numbers by the year 2022.
      • Currently, there are two sites that are CA|TS approved; Chitwan National Park in Nepal and Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve in Russia.
      • In November, the First Global CA|TS Consultation Meeting will be held in Bangkok, Thailand where CA|TS will be further explained, and experiences and challenges shared.
      • National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), in coordination with Wildlife Institute of India, has released the “Status of Leopards, Co-predators and Megaherbivores in India 2018”.

  1. The Union Cabinet has approved creation of 2 new posts of judicial members and 2 posts of administrative members at Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) for the benches at Jammu and Srinagar.
      • Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) was established in 1985 to address the issues arising out of service matters of government employees.
      • It currently has 17 benches, apart from the newly established benches at Jammu and Srinagar, with some of the benches catering to multiple states/UTs.
  2. Goa government has signed an MoU with edu-tech platform Jio Embibe for adaptive learning based on Artificial Intelligence for students.
      • The state govt has also signed an MoU with Eduisfun Technologies for giving gamified digital learning app called STEPapp to make learning of Maths and Science interesting for the benefit of students of class VI to XII.

      • The 101 Squadron is the second Indian Air Force squadron to be equipped with the Rafale aircraft. This squadron is titled 101 ‘Falcons of Chamb and Akhnoor’.

  1. Union Cabinet has approved a multilateral MoU signed between the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), and International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS).
      • This MoU will facilitate ease of doing business to entities registered with IFSCA, with the help of information shared by IOSCO and IAIS.
      • IOSCO aims to facilitate cross-border enforcement and exchange of information among the international community of securities regulators to ensure investor protection and reduce systemic risk.
      • On the other hand, IAIS is an international standards-setting body for the insurance sector.

      • The IOSCO is the international body that brings together the world’s securities regulators and is recognized as the global standard setter for the securities sector.
      • IOSCO develops, implements and promotes adherence to internationally recognized standards for securities regulation.

  1. WHO has released the 8th edition of the Global Tobacco Epidemic Report.
      • This report tracks the progress made by countries in tobacco control since 2008 and, for the first time, presents data on electronic nicotine delivery systems, such as ‘e-cigarettes’.
      • The report shows that many countries are making progress in the fight against tobacco, but some are not addressing emerging nicotine and tobacco products and failing to regulate them.
      • A total of 32 countries have currently banned Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS).
      • More than 8 million people die because of tobacco every year and it costs US$ 1.4 trillion each year to the global economy.
      • And globally, smoking prevalence among people aged over 15 years has fallen from 22.7% to 17.5%.
  2. ICT Working Group of the US-India CEO Forum has launched a report titled the Future of Connectivity in India, at a virtual event hosted by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF).

  1. Central government has introduced the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2021 which amends the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation Act, 1961.
      • The bill aims to enable bank customers to access their assured deposits (of Rs 5 lakhs) in 90 days period when their banks go into moratorium.
      • The bill was approved by the cabinet earlier this week. Minister of state for finance Bhagwat Karad introduced it in the Rajya Sabha.
      • The banks have to pay a premium to DICGC for keeping the deposits assured. Currently, the premium is Rs 12 paise (not exceeding Rs 15 paise) on every Rs 100 deposit.
  2. Limited Liability Partnership (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was also introduced in the Rajya Sabha to amend the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008.
      • The bill seeks to amend certain sections of the Act so as to convert offences into civil defaults and to convert the nature of punishment from fines to monetary penalties.
  3. According to the National Mineral Inventory data, India has 501.83 million tonnes of gold ore reserves as of April 1, 2015.
      • The largest reserves of gold ores are located in Bihar (44%), followed by Rajasthan (25%), Karnataka (21%), West Bengal (3%), Andhra Pradesh (3%), Jharkhand (2%).
      • The remaining 2% reserves are in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
      • All this data is presented by Union Minister of Mines Pralhad Joshi to the Rajya Sabha recently.
  4. Yes Bank and Indiabulls Housing Finance have signed a co-lending agreement for home loans.
      • Under this agreement, they will offer home loans to homebuyers at competitive interest rates.
  5. RBI has launched eligibility criteria and operational norms for non-bank companies seeking access to RBI’s centralized payments systems (CPS).
      • Implication – This step paves way for fintech firms such as Paytm and PhonePe to process RTGS and NEFT transactions.
      • In India, CPS are Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) systems, both owned and operated by the Reserve Bank.
      • The NEFT and RTGS systems were made available 24x7x365 with effect from December 2019 and December 2020 respectively.
      • Benefits of allowing non-banks access to CPS (for the non-banks):
        • Reduction in cost of payments for non-banks,
        • Minimising dependence on banks,
        • Reducing the time taken for completing payments,
        • Eliminating the uncertainty in finality of the payments
        • Avoiding the risk of failure or delay in execution of fund transfers
      • Benefits for the economy:
        • Lowers overall risk in the payments ecosystem,
        • Increased efficiency,
        • Innovations,
        • Improved standards of data security,
        • Better risk management
      • Eligibility criteria for non-banks:A minimum net worth of Rs 25 crore,
        • Adequate technology,
        • Cybersecurity infrastructure,
        • Compliance with data localisation norms among others.
        • Foreign entities would need India incorporated subsidiaries for this.
        • Entities incorporated outside India shall empower their local offices to carry out all operations in respect of CPS, but accountability will be held with the foreign parent institution, which has taken authorisation as Payment Service Provider (PSP).
      • The access to CPS will be provided in a phased manner.
      • In the first, prepaid payment instruments (PPIs), card networks and white label operators will be allowed access.
  6. Prest Loans (an MSME focused, digital lender, based in Delhi) has partnered with U GRO Capital (an NBFC) to provide secured business loans to Micro SME business units in tier 3 and 4 cities.
      • Both entities will provide credit to borrowers who lack the access to formal credit at affordable price without requirement of too many documents.
  7. Bank of India has chosen Hughes Communications India (satellite broadband and managed network services provider) for connecting its 1,800 bank branches across the country with satellite network connectivity.
      • The project will also link Aryavart Bank, Madhya Pradesh Gramin Bank (MPGB), Vidharbha Konkan Gramin Bank (VKGB), and rural BoI branches across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra with satellite internet.
  8. FamPay has launched India’s first Visa Prepaid Card for teenagers with personalized doodles on it, in partnership with Visa.
      • The card will be available in two different designs – the FamCard and FamCard Me.
      • FamPay has earlier launched FamCard.

      • Greening Equity Approach will enable Federal Bank to reduce its credit exposure to coal and increase its climate lending.

      • IFC has launched the Greening Equity Approach in 2018 at the World Bank Group – IMF Annual Meetings.
      • IFC’s approach to greening its equity and equity-like investments in financial institutions will help client financial institutions (in this case, it is Federal Bank) increase their climate-related lending while reducing their exposure to coal to zero or near zero by 2030.
  11. JSW Future Energy has partnered with Australia’s Fortescue Future Industries (FII) for potential projects relating to the production of green hydrogen.
      • This agreement is for assessing the potential of green hydrogen for green steel making, hydrogen mobility, green ammonia and other mutually agreed industrial applications in India.
      • This agreement will help JSW in becoming a 20 GW capacity power generating company by 2030 with about 85% of the portfolio comprising of green and renewable energy sources.
  12. Reliance Industries has announced to invest Rs 75,000 crores over the next 3 years to build a new clean energy business to fuel its commitment to be net carbon neutral by 2035.
      • As part of the investment plan, Reliance will set up four giga factories for producing clean energy equipment.
      • The four giga factories would include an integrated solar photovoltaic module factory, an advanced energy storage battery factory, an electrolyser factory for green hydrogen, and a fuel cell factory for converting hydrogen into motive and stationary power.
  13. DBS and Temasek have announced to launch ‘EvolutionX Debt Capital’, a $500 million debt financing platform for growth stage technology-enabled companies across Asia with a focus on India, Southeast Asia and China.
      • The company will be headquartered in Singapore.
      • EvolutionX will be led by Joint Interim CEOs Amit Sinha (Group Head of Telecoms, Media and Technology, Institutional Banking Group at DBS) and Aftab Mathur (Director, Investment (Innovation) at Temasek), before a full-time CEO is appointed in the next few months.
