      • Purpose – It has been started to reduce the rush in railways in the festive season.

  4. Chennai – Mysore – Chennai Shatabdi Express has received Integrated Management Systems (IMS) certification. The train uses Linke Hofmann Busch rakes.
      • In March 2021, a passenger train — Habibganj-Hazrat Nizamuddin-Habibganj Bhopal Express (a premier train of Bhopal division) – also received the IMS Certification. Bhopal Express is also equipped with Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches.
      • LHB are the passenger coaches of Indian Railways that have been developed and mostly produced by the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, Punjab.
      • The IMS Certification is given for world-class maintenance of the train, environment-friendly resources and convenient and safe travel of the passengers. IMS certification includes –
        • ISO 9001:2008 for Quality Management;
        • ISO 14001:2004 for Environment Management System; and
        • Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSAS) 18001: 2007.
  5. 21 states are running out of funds under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme.
      • MGNREGA has shown a negative net balance of ₹8,686 crore.
      • The scheme’s 2021-22 budget was set at just ₹73,000 crore.
      • MGNREGA data shows that 13% of households who demanded work under the scheme were not provided work.

  1. National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has released the ‘Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India, 2020’ report.
      • Suicides in India rose 10% from 2019 to an all-time high of 1,53,052 in the pandemic year of 2020.
      • Student suicides have seen the highest percentage increase at 21.20%.
      • In terms of absolute numbers, daily wage earners made up the largest share of total suicides at 37,666 in 2020.
      • The NCRB report divides suicides into nine categories — apart from daily wagers, housewives and people working in the farm sector, the deaths are listed under ‘professionals/salaried persons’, ‘students’, ‘self-employed persons’, ‘retired persons’, and ‘others’.

  1. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has launched the nationwide drive for expansion of Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) under the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) as part of the “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” initiative.
      • Vaccination against pneumonia is expected to bring down child mortality by nearly 60%.
      • Pneumonia caused by pneumococcus is the most common cause of severe pneumonia in children. In India, around 16% of deaths among children occur due to pneumonia.
      • The nationwide roll-out of the PCV will reduce child mortality by around 60%.
  2. India-Israel Joint Working Group (JWG) has decided to form a task force to formulate a comprehensive 10-year roadmap to identify new areas of defence cooperation.
      • The 15th meeting of the JWG took place in Tel Aviv, Israel.
      • It was co-chaired by Indian Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and Director General of Israel’s Defence Ministry Amir Eshel.
      • The JWG is the apex body between the defence ministries of India and Israel to “comprehensively review and guide all aspects of bilateral defence cooperation”.
  3. Deep Ocean Mission – aka Samudrayaan – has been launched by Ministry of Earth Sciences in Chennai.
      • It is India’s first manned ocean mission. After launching this, India will join the elite club of nations such as the USA, Russia, Japan, France and China which have launched such underwater vehicles for carrying out subsea activities.
      • Sagar Nidhi is a premier research vessel of the National Institute of Ocean Technology. This vessel will be used for survey and exploration of resources, oceanography, and characteristics of the sea bed.
      • The proposed new ship, which would cost about ₹1000 to ₹1,200 crore, is also a replacement for the 38-year-old vessel ORV Sagar Kanya.
      • ‘MATSYA 6000’ is the name of the vessel which will carry humans to the 6000 meters inside the ocean.
      • National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) is the nodal agency for this mission.
      • Total budget of the Samudrayaan mission – ₹4,077 crore for 5 years.
  4. Ministry of Electronics and IT has launched future skills PRIME programme in collaboration with NASSCOM.
      • The program aims to create an up-skilling /re-skilling ecosystem in 10 emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, IOT, blockchain, 3D printing, AR/VR etc.
      • It will facilitate continuous enhancement of skills of IT professionals in line with their aspirations and aptitude.
      • The private sector will be roped in as training, financial and employment stakeholder.
      • Government officials will also be provided training to make them familiar with growing technologies.
  5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Pope Francis at the Vatican City in his first meeting with the head of the sovereign of the Vatican City State.

State News

  1. Delhi govt has launched the “Paryavaran Saathi” Chatbot and website to increase participation of youth in anti-pollution campaigns.
      • This campaign is a collaboration between the Delhi government and UNICEF’s YuWaah with over 10 lakh youth participating in the same. Out of 10 lakh youth, 50,000 are from Delhi itself.
      • Delhi govt has also launched a one-stop website (www.delhifightspollution.in) to inform about the pollution levels in the national capital and steps taken to control the situation.
      • On the other hand, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia has launched “Parents Samvad”, an outreach programme for parents of Delhi government schoolchildren.
  2. Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bhubaneswar, has launched the world’s first-ever FIFA ‘Football for School Programme’ at the institute.
      • Football for Schools (F4S) is an ambitious world-wide programme run by FIFA, which aims to contribute to the education, development and empowerment of around 700 million children.
      • This is the first time that FIFA has started the Football for Schools programme.
      • In the run-up, a three-day ‘Capacity Building Workshop – Train the Trainer’ was conducted by FIFA at KISS in which 100 Physical Education teachers from Odisha and over 100 football players from KIIT & KISS participated.
  3. Tamil Nadu government has launched Illam Thedi Kalvi (Education at Doorstep) project to address the learning gap that arose among students due to closure of schools.
      • The project would be launched on a pilot project basis in 12 districts of the State.
      • The project promotes education at all levels from school to college for all sections of society.
      • Tamil Nadu has changed the date of its statehood day to July 18 from November 1. On July 18, Tamil Nadu got its present name.
  4. Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has passed a resolution to request the central government to take up a caste-based census of Backward Classes (BC) in the state as part of the 2021 national census.
      • The last caste-based census in India was conducted in the year 1931.
      • Article 15(4) and 16(4) of the Constitution state that the state can make special provisions for the advancement of any Socially and Educationally Backward Classes.
  5. Karnataka government has announced to set up a Centre of Excellence for Fintech or Financial Technology in Mangalore.

  1. Indian Navy’s Stealth Frigate ‘INS Tushil’ – 7th frigate of P1135.6 class / Talwar class frigate – has been launched Yantar Shipyard in Russia’s Kaliningrad.
      • ”Tushil” means protector shield in Sanskrit.
      • In October 2016, India and Russia had signed an agreement to construct four additional P1135.6 class ships — two each in Russia and India.
      • The delivery of the two ships from Russia is expected by 2023.
  2. Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) have jointly flight-tested an indigenously developed Long Range Bomb (LRB) from an aerial platform.
      • The bomb has been designed and developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad in coordination with other DRDO laboratories.

International News

  1. US Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched the South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP), a new, five-year, USD 49 million initiative.
      • The initiative will facilitate collaboration among Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka to improve access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy.
      • The SAREP initiative will enable the deployment of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies, transform and modernize utilities, drive regional cooperation, and stimulate private-sector participation and investments in the region, in accordance with the priorities of each country.
  2. Other Initiatives for Climate:

      • US-India Climate and Clean Energy Agenda 2030 Partnership were signed by India and US in April 2021 for accelerating India’s ambitious 2030 climate goals.
  3. The 13th Meeting of Heads of National Statistical Offices of BRICS Countries was held in virtual format.
      • Chair of the Meeting – Dr G. P. Samanta, Chief Statistician of India and Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
      • Theme of the meeting – “NSOs efforts in monitoring Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”
      • Reports – During the meeting, the Joint Statistical Publication (JSP) 2021 and JSPSnapshot 2021 for BRICS Countries were released. JSP detailed about the achievements of NSOs of BRICS.
  4. United Nations has granted the Observer Status to the International Solar Alliance.
      • UN Security Council has adopted a resolution on the protection of education in armed conflict.

  1. UN Development Program has released The State of Climate Ambition report.
      • In total, 178 countries representing 79.3% of global GHG emissions, plan to submit enhanced NDCs– up from just 75 countries in 2019.  Of this group, 160 countries have strengthened their mitigation targets.
      • Vulnerable countries, often home to the world’s poorest people who are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, continue to be trailblazers on climate ambition, leaving richer countries lagging.
      • This group of 78 countries is only responsible for 7% of global GHG emissions.
      • In total, 178 countries representing 79.3% of global GHG emissions, plan to submit enhanced NDCs– up from just 75 countries in 2019.

  2. PayU (online payment solutions provider) has launched ‘PayU Token Hub’ – a tokenisation solution to help businesses in complying with the tokenisation requirements of RBI.
      • PayU and Wibmo (a PayU owned full-stack global PayTech company), in partnership with major card networks including Visa, MasterCard – and leading issuing banks have developed this solution.
      • PayU Token Hub is developed as an interoperable plug-n-play solution, to enable card on file and device tokenisation using a single integration point.
      • RBI mandated that only banks and networks will be allowed to store customer card data from January 1, 2022.
  3. Max Life Insurance Co. Ltd. is the first life insurer to enter the Account Aggregator (AA) ecosystem.
      • AA ecosystem allows the customers to digitally share their financial information and data across various financial institutions within the AA framework.
      • Max Life has collaborated with FinVu and Finarkein to adopt the AA ecosystem for seamless and secure access of customers’ financial information, thereby reducing timelines for policy issuance.
  4. Kotak RuPay Veer Platinum and Kotak RuPay Veer Select Credit Cards have been launched by Kotak Mahindra Bank for Army, Navy, and Air Force.
      • For this, the bank has partnered with National Payment Corporation of India Ltd.
  5. During the Sa-Dhan National Conference on ‘Revitalising financial inclusion’, RBI Deputy Governor Rajeswar Rao has announced that RBI is planning to make micro-lending collateral-free, not just for microfinance institutions (MFIs) but for all lenders.
      • Sa-Dhan is the Association of Community Development Finance Institution, working for enhancing financial inclusion in India. Sa Dhan was established in 1999.
      • At present, Sa-Dhan has a membership base of 225 institutions (Including NBFC-MFI, NBFCs, Societies, Trusts, Cooperatives, and SHPIs) also including Banks / SFB, Rating agencies and Capacity Building agencies, representing all legal forms and operating models.
      • Sa-Dhan is recognized by the RBI as Self-Regulatory Organisation (SRO) for the Microfinance Sector. Sa-Dhan is recognized as National Support Organization (NSO) by National Rural Livelihood Promotion (NRLM).
  6. Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare has revised maximum ceiling limits of two family pension payable to a child or children in respect of both the parents to ₹1.25 lakh per month (50% of ₹2.5 lakh ordinary family pension at enhanced rate) and ₹75,000 per month (30% of ₹2.5 lakh ordinary family pension) with effect from January 1, 2016.
      • The order dated October 29, 2021, has been implemented with effect from January 1, 2016.
  7. RBI has partially withdrawn some of the strict norms barring banks from opening current accounts for borrowers towards whom they have no credit exposure.
      • As of now, if the borrowers’ exposure of the banking system is less than Rs 5 crore, there is no restriction on the opening of current accounts or on the provision of cash credit/overdraft facility by banks.
      • The norms limiting current accounts to lenders who have a credit relationship was introduced to prevent diversion of funds by borrowers.
      • Borrowers who have availed of credit of over Rs 5 crore from the banking system can maintain their current accounts with only one of the banks with which they have a CC/OD facility.
