  1. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Jabalpur circle, has found more than 100 remains including largest Varha sculpture of 2nd century to 15th century in the core area of the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserves in Madhya Pradesh’s Umaria district.
      • Twenty-six caves of the 2nd Century CE to the 5th century CE were found.
  2. The central govt has extended the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY) for another three months (October 2022-December 2022).
      • Under the scheme, free grains at 5 kg per person per month for all the beneficiaries of NFSA continue till December 2022.
      • This is the 7th phase of the PMGKAY scheme, with an estimated corpus of Rs. 44,762 Crores. The total outgo of foodgrains in Phase VII is expected to be 122 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT).
      • The govt has spent Rs 3.45 lakh crore, so far, in six phases. Now, the overall expenditure of PMGKAY will be about 3.91 lakh crores for all of the seven phases.
      • The total allocation of food grain for phases I- VII is about 1121 LMT.

        • Phase I and II (8 months): April’20 to Nov.’20
        • Phase-III to V (11 months): May’21 to March’22

  1. Karnataka govt has introduced the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Bill in the state’s Legislative Assembly to provide Kannada-speaking people reservations in jobs and education in the state.
  2. Calcutta High Court has pronounced Duare Ration Scheme as ultra vires to the National Food Security Act, 2013. Therefore, it is declared void by the court.
      • The scheme was launched in 2021 to deliver the ration at the doorstep of the beneficiaries.
      • The court observed that “the state has transgressed the limit of delegation by obliging the fair price shop dealers to distribute ration to the beneficiaries at their doorstep in the absence of any authority to that effect in the enabling act, i.e., the National Food Security Act.”
  3. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the Lata Mangeshkar Chowk in Ayodhya on her 93rd birth anniversary (28 September 1929).
      • A towering 40 feet long and 12 feet high sculpture of a veena engraved with a picture of Goddess Saraswati has been installed at the chowk.
      • Noted playback singers Kumar Sanu and Shailendra Singh and music-composer duo Anand-Milind were conferred with the National Lata Mangeshkar Award given by the Madhya Pradesh govt on this day.
  4. The Maharashtra government has decided to name the Chipi greenfield airport in Sindhudurg district after the late barrister Nath Pai, a freedom fighter and socialist.
      • 2022 is the birth centenary year of Nath Pai.
      • Pai, who hailed from Vengurla, had represented the Rajapur Lok Sabha constituency from 1957 to 1967 as Praja Socialist Party leader.
  5. The district administration of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, in collaboration Bengaluru-based non-profit Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), is implementing the TamiraSES project to restore the Thamirabarani river.
      • Thamirabarani or Tamraparni or Porunai is a perennial river that originates from the Pothigai hills of the Western Ghats and flows through Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts of the Tamil Nadu into the Gulf of Mannar.

  1. Uttar Pradesh cabinet has announced to create Ranipur Tiger Reserve in the Bundelkhand region, which it shares with neighbouring Madhya Pradesh.
      • It will be the first tiger reserve in the region and the fourth in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
      • It will be the fourth in UP, after Dudhwa, Pilibhit and Amangarh (buffer of Corbett Tiger Reserve).
      • The tiger reserve will be established inside the reserve in the Ranipur Wildlife Sanctuary (RWS) in the Chitrakoot district.

Memorandum of Understanding

  1. Coromandel International, Chambal Fertilisers and Indian Potash Limited have signed an MOU with Canpotex, Canada (one of the largest Potash suppliers globally) to supply up to 15 LMT of potash annually for three years.
      • Potash, which is a source of potassium, is used both for direct application as MOP as well as in combination with ‘N’ and ‘P’ nutrients in the NPK fertilisers. India meets 100% of its potash requirement through imports.
      • India imports approximately 40 LMT MOP annually.
      • Department of Fertiliser has included PDM (Potash derived from Molasses) in the Nutrient Based Subsidy Scheme (NBS) scheme to support indigenous sources of Potash.
  2. International Civil Aviation Organization has signed an MOU with International Solar Alliance to curb the carbon emissions in the aviation industry.
      • The MOU was signed during the 42nd session of ICAO’s Assembly in Montreal, Canada.
  3.       • The Mastercard Carbon Calculator informs consumers about the carbon footprint of their purchases, so that they can make more mindful spending decisions and contribute to forest restoration.
      • It also enables consumers to receive a snapshot of the carbon emissions generated by their purchases across spending categories.

Appointments

  1. The central government has appointed Lt-General Anil Chauhan as the country’s next chief of defence staff (CDS).
      • He is a known China expert who retired as the Eastern Army Command chief in May last year.
      • Prior to this appointment, Chauhan was serving as the military advisor to national security advisor Ajit Doval and the National Security Council Secretariat.
      • This is the first time, a retired three-star officer (Lt-Gen, Air Marshal, Vice Admiral) will return to active service as a four-star officer like the Army, Navy and IAF chiefs.
