Karnataka Launches India’s First State Led Space Centre

ADB Launches USD 70 Billion Initiative to Connect Asia’s Power Grids & Digital Networks

  • What: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced that the organisation will provide $70 billion in new energy and digital infrastructure initiatives across Asia and the Pacific by 2035 to strengthen cross-border connectivity and access.

    Pan-Asia Power Grid Initiative

    • The Pan-Asia Power Grid Initiative involves proposed investments of $50 billion to develop cross-border electricity infrastructure including transmission lines, substations, and storage systems.
    • This energy programme aims to integrate 20 GW of renewable energy and improve electricity access for 200 million people by 2035.
    • The initiative will build 22,000 circuit-km of transmission lines and create approximately 840,000 jobs while reducing regional power sector emissions by 15%.

    Asia-Pacific Digital Highway

    • The Asia-Pacific Digital Highway involves a $20 billion investment focusing on fibre networks, satellite links, and data centres to expand digital connectivity.
    • This digital programme aims to provide first-time broadband access to 200 million people and reduce costs in remote areas by around 40%.

Public Sector Banks Increase IT Spending for Cybersecurity

  • What: Public sector banks are increasing their information technology spending to secure systems and safeguard customer data following global concerns regarding the advanced hacking and coding capabilities of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool Claude Mythos.

    • Anthropic, a United States-based artificial intelligence company, found that the latest Claude Mythos model is highly skilled at performing complex cybersecurity and hacking tasks.
    • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged banks to take pre-emptive measures as Claude Mythos can find weaknesses in operating systems to launch potential cyber attacks.
    • The government formed a panel under State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman C S Setty to assess risks from the platform and suggest mitigating measures.
    • The window between software vulnerability disclosure and weaponisation has compressed from 19 days in 2023 to under 72 hours today for banks in India.
    • Anthropic launched “Project Glasswing” to give 12 tech companies access to the tool in an effort to secure the most critical software in the world.
      • The 12 Founding Partners: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Apple, Broadcom, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, JPMorganChase, The Linux Foundation, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Palo Alto Networks, and Anthropic.
      • These companies will check the vulnerabilities in their own softwares by using this access to ‘Claude Mythos’ tool.
    • Claude Mythos is technically a Large Language Model (LLM), but it belongs to a specialized class known as “Frontier Models.”
      • Frontier models are the most advanced AI models available at a given moment, trained on massive datasets to deliver state-of-the-art performance across many tasks, representing the cutting edge of AI capability.

India Direct Tax Collections Fall Short of Estimates

  • What: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) reported that net direct tax collections grew 5.12% year-on-year to ₹23.40 lakh crore in 2025-26, yet the total amount missed revised estimates by ₹81,000 crore.

Global Methane Tracker 2026 Released by International Energy Agency

  • What: The International Energy Agency (IEA) Global Methane Tracker 2026 report states that India emitted 2.2 million tonnes of methane from coal mines in 2025, making it the second-largest emitter in South and Southeast Asia, after Indonesia.

    • The 2025 emission levels are more than double the 0.8 million tonnes India officially reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2020.
